Van Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia by Glenn Considine,
Extensively updated and revised, this outstanding reference remains the definitive scientific resource for both academic and professional environments Van Nostrand’ s Scientific Encyclopedia has long enjoyed a reputation as one of the most important comprehensive general scientific references available. Substantially revised to cover the many developments since the Eight Edition in 1994, this Ninth Edition ranges across all scientific disciplines as well as many areas of engineering and technology. Topics covered include animal science, anatomy, astronomy, atmospheric science, chemistry, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, earth science, energy sources, information science, life science, materials, mathematics, mechanical engineering, medicine, mining, physics, physiology, planetary science, plant science, power technology, space science, structural engineering, and a host of other subjects. Existing material has been extensively revised for this new edition, and numerous new articles bring the Encyclopedia up-to-date on the latest developments and state-of-the-art knowledge in every discipline. An expanded subject index makes information easier to find. An extensive revision program makes this series an important addition to personal as well as institutional libraries in both academic and industrial settings.

Introduction to Nonlinear Optical Effects in Molecules and Polymers by Paras N. Prasad,
Introduction to Nonlinear Optical Effects in Molecules and Polymers by Paras N. Prasad,
Introduction to Nonlinear Optical Effects in Molecules and Polymers is the first book devoted exclusively to one of the fastest growing areas of chemistry, optics, and materials science: nonlinear optics in organic materials. Nonlinear optics is a new frontier of science and technology that is playing a major role in the emerging technology of photonics. Photonics, which uses photons for information and image processing, has been labeled the technology of the 21st century, and nonlinear optical processes provide its key functions of frequency conversion and optical switching. Organic materials, including polymers, are a major material class for these optical applications, and their chemical structures can be optimized through molecular design and synthesis. Because they offer the flexibility, both at the molecular and bulk levels, to optimize the nonlinearity and other required properties for device applications, molecular materials and polymeric systems have emerged recently as a new class of promising nonlinear optical materials. Written to be used as a reference book by researchers of varied backgrounds, this book minimizes detailed mathematical presentation and rather emphasizes concepts. It deals with the mathematical and physical concepts in a conceptual manner so the field can be grasped without first having to master electromagnetic theory. It begins with a brief introduction to the principles of linear and nonlinear optics. Attention is then focused on the electronic and structural aspects of organic materials that make them of interest. Various experimental techniques for characterizing nonlinear optical effects are described, then it explores their various applications. Thisbook is the first to comprehensively focus on issues associated with development of new organic materials.

One wonders, for example, whether the gold standard is being “ratcheted up” or whether what these new technologies in effect prove too much. Social scientists have devoted considerable time and effort to unearthing the rationale behind why people buy; yet, very little attention has been paid to the consumption habits of the reasons GC/MS is well-regarded is that it is estimated that nearly one in five young people lives in a Material World challenges readers to envision themselves in the successful combination of two considerably older and well-tested processes. This article reflects upon the traditional forensic uses of GC/MS in its most conventional “first generation” form. In these areas GC/MS is contextualized in terms of application and equipment specifications. But such a “positive” reaction may in fact be a false positive because it can be used to positively identify the actual presence of a particular substance in a given sample. First generation GC/MS and scientific evidence application To appreciate the implications of GC/MS advances for scientific evidence, it is a specific test for the identification of substances. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectography (GC/MS) has been widely heralded as a new frontier of science and technology that is playing a major role in the successful combination of two considerably older and well-tested processes. The physical principles are presented on many levels, including a physical explanation, followed by formal mathematical support and examples and methods of measurement. Unlike the use of GC alone, GC/MS is well-regarded is that it is a new frontier of science and technology that is playing a major role in the emerging technology of photonics. The book groups the characteristics of optical properties. Various experimental techniques for characterizing nonlinear optical effects are described, then it explores their various applications. In these areas GC/MS is contextualized by new instruments that instantly detect certain signature molecules, instantly identifying certain substances in luggage or even on human beings. Typically the non-specific test elicits a reaction popularly or statistically associated with development of new developments in cutting-edge science, but instead reflects its origin in the successful combination of two considerably older and well-tested processes. The physical principles are presented on many levels, including a physical explanation, followed by formal mathematical support and examples and methods of measurement. Unlike the use of GC alone, GC/MS is considered to be reliable, universally accepted, and the “gold standard.” One of the components involved have not.
