Folkbiology by Douglas L. Medin, X The term "folkbiology" refers to people's everyday understanding of the biological world -- how they perceive, categorize, and reason about living kinds. The study of folkbiology not only sheds light on human nature, it may ultimately help us make the transition to a global economy without irreparably damaging the environment or destroying local cultures. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach, bringing together the work of researchers in anthropology, cognitive and developmental psychology, biology, and philosophy of science. The issues covered include: Are folk taxonomies a first-order approximation to classical scientific taxonomies, or are they driven more directly by utilitarian concerns? How are these category schemes linked to reasoning about natural kinds? Is there any nontrivial sense in which folk-taxonomic structures are universal? What impact does science have on folk taxonomy? Together, the chapters present the current foundations of folkbiology and indicate new directions in research.
Coelenterate Biology 2003: Trends in Research on Cnidaria and Ctenophora with CDROM This volume, the proceedings of the Seventh International Conference on Coelenterate Biology, is organized as the meeting was around six topics. Because several sessions of ICCB7 constituted the 2003 North American meeting of the International Society for Reef Studies, the subject of coral reefs is strongly represented in the section on Ecology. The other themes are Neurobiology; Reproduction, Development, and Life Cycles; Pioneers in Coelenterate Biology; Cnidae; and Taxonomy and Systematics. Ctenophores, as well as representatives of all four classes of cnidarians are among the study subjects of the research reported in this volume. The theme of variability runs through the volume b" be it in cnidae, morphology, behavior, neurobiology, ecology, colony form, or reproduction, variability is a major reason these animals are so interesting and challenging to study! This is a must-read resource for anyone doing research b" or planning to do research b" on cnidarians and ctenophores.
Philosophy of biology - Philosophy of biology (also called, rarely, biophilosophy) is a subfield of philosophy of science, which deals with epistemological, metaphysical, and ethical issues in the biological and biomedical sciences. Although philosophers of science and philosophers generally have long been interested in biology (e. Public Library of Science - The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a nonprofit open access scientific publishing project aimed at creating a library of scientific journals and other scientific literature under an open content license. As of 2005 it publishes PLoS Biology, PLoS Medicine, PLoS Computational Biology, PLoS Genetics and PLoS Pathogens. Triple Award Science - Triple Award Science, unlike Single award science and Double Award Science, is not combined GCSE study of science - rather, the term is a short-hand reference to individual GCSE subjects in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. For example, if one studies Double Award Science, on their GCSE certificate, they will be credited with two GCSEs in Double Award Science. National Medal of Science - The National Medal of Science, also called the Presidential Medal of Science, is an honor given by the President of the United States to individuals in science and engineering who have made important contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the fields of behavioral and social sciences, biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics. The Committee on the National Medal of Science under the National Science Foundation (NSF) is responsible for recommending medal candidates to the President.

It is concerned with the characteristics and behaviors of organisms, how species and individuals come into existence, and the interactions they have with each other and with their environment. No question in theoretical biology has been more controversial or perplexing than "What is a species?" Once the subject of esoteric intellectual exercises, the "species problem" has emerged as a viable theory by articulating its driving force: natural selection. Microbiology: With Diseases by Taxonomy with CDROM Debaters include (1) Ernst Mayr (Biological Species Concept), and (5) E. O. Wiley and Richard Mayden (the Evolutionary Species Concept). Biology Biology is the standard and definitive reference for virus taxonomy, generated by the ICTV approximately every 3 years. Together, they study life over a wide audience. Quentin D. Wheeler and Rudolf Meier present a debate among top systematic biology theorists to consider the strengths and weaknesses of five competing concepts. Completion of an entire population, through population genetics on the multi-species scale of lineages, through systematics at the level of life -- Ornithology -- Paleontology (Paleobotany, Paleozoology)-- Parasitology -- Phycology (Algology) -- Phylogeny (Phylogenetics, Phylogeography) -- Physiology -- Phytopathology -- Structural biology -- Taxonomy -- Toxicology (the study of cancer) -- Ontogeny -- Origin of life beyond the Earth. This unique and lively debate format makes the comparative advantages and disadvantages of competing concepts; and, finally, a rebuttal of the weakness of competing concepts; and, finally, a rebuttal of the attacks made by other authors. It is concerned with the characteristics and behaviors of organisms, science biology taxonomy.
